QNX at The Core of Many Machines,Machine to Machine COMS &BB10

On March 25, 2013,  I discussed a March 16, 2013, interview with the Francophone:”LE GRAND JOURNAL DE NEW YORK” published on March 18, 2013, CMO of BlackBerry, Frank Boulben stated that “BlackBerry aims to be the leading provider of machine to machine (M2M) embedded systems”, using QNX and BlackBerry 10 devices.  The company has as a goal to be the leading innovator in mobile computing, not necessarily the biggest seller of cell phones like Samsung and Apple. With QNX in everything from slot machines, cars, home appliances, medical and other devices, BlackBerry can offer novel solutions and applications with these embedded systems.  Check out this new video from BlackBerry:

BBM Channels

IMG_00000788

An exciting announcement at #blackberrylive was the introduction of BBM Channels, allowing an unprecedented platform for creating customizable “Channels” that might include one for friends only or for family only. Recently, I posted about how displeased I am with Facebook being in my face by forcing me to see up front posts I’m not interested in. The BBM Channels offer me the opportunity to use real time immediate messaging with the groups that I want to be in the “Know” with, like my family in Canada.

Thorsten Heins mentioned some interesting stats during the live keynote:

1)BBM has 60 million active users
2)50 million users spend 90 min per day on BBM
3)There are 10 billion messages per day
4)50% of the messages are read within 20 seconds
5)BBM is super fast, private and reliable

Initially BBM Channels is now available in beta zone (see separate entry on updating the BBM app on your OS 10 device). It allows the creation of private or public Channels for business or personal use. The full feature set of BBM, voice, video chat, messaging, screen share, will be added to BBM Channels Beta with frequent updates prior to launch by mid summer. The plan is also to reclaim BBM as the original mobile messaging platform by going cross platform with Android (sandwich)  and iOS6 apps later this summer. The goal is to add video chat and screen share to these platforms, while keeping BBM feature rich.

This is a clever move by BlackBerry which recognizes the historical role BBM originally played in the American market and it’s dominance, with the goal of recreating this. Once people can communicate cross platform with BBM Channels in unique, immediate and purposeful ways for them, there is no better way for them to be socialized into perhaps taking a look at the latest BlackBerry mobile devices.

Fly Delta and Get Free wifi On Your BBRY OS 10 Device

I’m posting this from 30000 miles up in the air as I fly to Orlando for BlackBerry Live. I hope to catch the opening keynote speakers, but will stream as needed live. We take so much for granted with what we can do. I’m writing this on my Dev Alpha A up in flight. Can you imagine what we can change, as intelligent beings, if we set our minds to it? Keep dreaming, keep moving, making things better.

Namaste,

Hello BlackBerry Live 2013

I’ll be at the “BlackBerry Live 2013” conference in Orlando, Florida. It will be my first BlackBerry World / Live event, but not my first BlackBerry Developer event. Like BlackBerry, I’m reinventing myself by porting old school programming skills in C+, C++ into a new area, namely hand held devices, and in particular the new BBRY OS10. At the meeting, I am looking to have some fun (With Alicia Keys headlining a session and a Tuesday night private party at Universal Studios who isn’t looking for a good jam!?), meet new people and learn more about what’s to come, and what other people are up to.

If you are at the event I hope to see you and meet new friends. Looking forward to saying “Hello” face to face and eye to eye.

Cheers!
Fernando
