Similarities with 9/11 WTC SITE MEMORIAL DESIGN and 85th Annual OSCARS Awards Show Set Design

by Nicholas Tanis

Every year, I look forward to watching the Oscar Award presentations on televison.
This year was no different…or was it!?
After watching the Oscar’s Red Carpet “parade” on WABC -TV, the final countdown to the opening of the 2013 Awards Show commenced. The music cued, the curtain was raised, and the host walked out onto the stage.
And what to my wonderous eyes should I see …but a beautiful stage set design, that was remarkably identical to the 9/11 WTC Memorial – NYC, I had designed and submitted some ten years ago to the World Trade Commison, NYC!

Stage Set Design for OSCARS 85th Award Show Presentation, 2013
I really don’t understand what the relevancy of “a river of lit candles” has to do with the motion picture industry, film-making, the cinema, acting, drama, comedy, musicals, movie palaces of yore, etc. or any other given era of Hollywood and its relative symbolic icons.
What I had designed was meant to commemorate and memorialize all of those 3,000 victims, who lost their lives that bright sunny September morning, and thereafter, forever changing the entire world we live in today.
Image2WTCDesignSynopsis
Image4OscarCrystalDesignStreisand
Of course this very same sentiment was most apropos when Barbara Streisand came out on stage center and sang her signature “Memories” – paying tribute in “In Memoriam” to those who the Academy and film industry had lost this past year. The similarity of emotion was very touching indeed!
Could this be sheer coincidence, happenstance… or not!?
We all know what Confuscius had to say.
You decide – thank you!

Skyfall The 007 Flick that Brings M Full Circle

Directed by Sam Mendes, “Skyfall” is, a reinvention of Bond, with Craig, after the last somewhat disappointing installment with “Quantum of Solace”.  The beginning action sequences including  Bond frolicking on top of a train are classic  and with Turkey as a back set, it is appropriate for this cross-roads of old Bond meets new Bond.  Javier Bardem shines as a twisted villain out for revenge on “M” or Emma, played by the remarkable Judi Dench who shamefully was left out of the Oscars for 2013 as was the film in other key categories.  The film in going from Emma to Mallory passes on the baton and brings us full circle in the gender of “M”.  It is an action packed, riveting suspenseful film that hooks the viewer in from the get go for a great adventure that will not disappoint.  Rent it today, if you have not seen it as it is a 9 on my scale of 1 to 10.  It is by far one of the better installments in this franchise of film.

WITH: Daniel Craig (James Bond), Javier Bardem (Silva), Ralph Fiennes (Gareth Mallory), Naomie Harris (Eve), Bérénice Lim Marlohe (Severine), Ben Whishaw (Q), Rory Kinnear (Tanner), Ola Rapace (Patrice), Albert Finney (Kincade) and Judi Dench (M).

“Argo” Left me Wanting a More Compelling Story

I saw “Argo” a couple of nights ago, and I was left wanting a more compelling screenplay. There is not much action nor suspense until the last 30 minutes.  The acting is first rate, and it is a shame that Ben Affleck was not nominated for a “Best Actor” Oscar, because other than this  I don’t see the academy bestowing too many awards on this film, especially with the likes of “Lincoln”, “Sky Fall”, and “Zero Dark Thirty” in contention.  According to the president of the day, Jimmy Carter, the story is 90% accurate but for the role the CIA played in setting the rescue up, which in fact was played by the Canadian government of the day with Flora McDonald as the minister for External Affairs and Joe Clark as the PM.  Having lived in Canada during the crisis, I was somewhat perplexed by the story in the movie which had the CIA and the Ben Affleck character be the hero when in fact, Ken Taylor, then Canadian ambassador, played the pivotal role in getting the hostages out.  The Swiss abided by having the plane fly out of Tehran. Taylor convinced the, then Prime Minister of Canada Joe Clarke, to issue Canadian passports to fool the Iranians into thinking the six Americans were Canadian citizens. The covert operation was called: The Canadian Caper.  I cannot imagine how this movie could possibly “thank Canada” as Mr. Affleck says he intended to do with such a distortion of truth.  CIA agent, Tony Mendez as portrayed in the film, was never a pivotal character nor only hero in the real story.

IMG_00000836IMG_00000834

Putting aside, the lack of historical accuracy, as an entertaining film the movie fails with such a poor screenplay that is all over the place with little focus on the real drama and suspense in getting the hostages out alive.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this film a 4; it shouldn’t take an hour and twenty minutes before I am hooked into wanting to watch the rest of the story, imaginary or real.

WITH: Ben Affleck (Tony Mendez), Bryan Cranston (Jack O’Donnell), Alan Arkin (Lester Siegel), John Goodman (John Chambers), Victor Garber (Ken Taylor), Tate Donovan (Bob Anders), Clea DuVall (Cora Lijek), Scoot McNairy (Joe Stafford), Rory Cochrane (Lee Schatz), Christopher Denham (Mark Lijek) and Kerry Bishé (Kathy Stafford).

BlackBerry Moves On at near $14 for Several Days In Spite of the Short Sellers Writing it Off

Every day sees new stories, much like the last two years with so called “analysts” writing off BlackBerry.  These sad stories really seem to amount to people cutting and pasting articles together with very little serious thought or analysis. The latest impending doom is due to the allegation that “Instagram”  won’t be native.  Does anyone really care if an Android port is the solution?  Do we really need to post to Instagram our shots of us eating “pasta”?  Or, will posting to the parent company site, Facebook,  after editing any picture with the new picture editor, not suffice?  To hinge a new product’s success on whether a single “used to having”  app is available in its native form at launch is silly.  I’m sure we can all adapt to new ways of doing things that offer for some a unique and better approach, and for others the comfort level of having that stale old app that they’re used to, never mind that we can access much of  so called “app” functionalities via the web browser. There is so much more to the new OS that is redefining mobile.  In spite of all of this continued bad karma, BlackBerry moves on.

When one looks at the stock over the last week,  it has traded on average at $14, or over the last month at an average of near $16, on the roller coaster ride that I predicted near a month ago, in another blog on this site.  Since September, 2012 the stock has gone from $6 and change to near $14; that is an increase of  133.33%–shame on the short sellers who did not hold onto it at $9.00 and then again at $12.00.  Even today, on seeking alpha, I read an article  by an analyst (Eric Savitz) stating that the stock will go from $12 to $9.  I suppose the fact that the stock has been above $12 for a long while now has eluded this fellow.  On the other hand, one can usually tell a serious, well researched, article supporting the numbers purported.  I cite one such article below (by “Tufenk”) where a target price of $20 is re-iterated by several more serious analysts.  I provide below some of the graphical trends for BlackBerry, Apple and Nokia. Clearly, it is safe to say that BlackBerry is on the rise, over the last six months, to where it was a year ago, Nokia has not changed much, over the last year, and Apple is on the decline, over the last six months.

“Monday Mornings” On TNT

I saw the first episode of  this medical drama, and I was left unimpressed.  I thought I would give it a second chance, and I was moved by the second show.  On  the third episode, earlier this week, I once again was left wondering if the berating of the residents isn’t already worn.  I don’t think that the over-dramatizations that  typically occur at the end segment of the show add to it. In fact, the premise on which the title is based may take away from the show. This involves Monday morning morbidity and mortality meetings headed up by Dr. Hooten, played by Alfred Molina (the villain in “Spiderman 2”).  In episode one,  neurosurgeon, Dr. Tyler Wilson (played by “Battle Star Galactica’s”, Jamie Bamber) is taken to task for recklessly operating on a child, before checking paternal medical history. There seems to be a limited number of residents (six other main characters played by: Bill Irwin, Keong Sim, Jennifer Finnigan, Ving Rhames, Emily Swallow and Sarayu Rao)  to beat-up on and how this will be sustained for a season, let alone beyond that, I am not sure. This is especially so, if the rest of the show cannot hook people into watching. The main characters, so far, aren’t people that I particular care to see or know, or follow, but it might be too early yet to give up on this show, from David E. Kelley, based on a book by CNN’s Sanjay Gupta.

“House of Cards” on Netflix is Like a Tasty Side of Ribs

“House of Cards” on Netflix is Like a Tasty Side of Ribs

Falling off the wagon is never good, but being pushed off by a scheming Machiavellian out to protect his fanatical drive for power sees Peter Russo (Corey Stoll) being trampled by Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey), in episode 11 of  “House of Cards”, on Netflix. The show centers on Francis Underwood, the Democratic House Majority Whip, who in the first episode sees his plans for reaching the highest office in the USA derailed.  Spacey,  who also directs the show, brilliantly plays the dark Underwood who schemes in love, sex and all relations, with greed to achieve power. His wife, Claire (Robin Wright) is a willing partner, even if from time to time she shows her wounds from the battle she endures with what little conscience she has left. Peter is outside his element, ill equipped to live in D.C.,with too many crutches, including the bottle. His Pennsylvania working class roots and conflicted loyalty to his friends and where he came from are the cause of his impending fate at the hands of Underwood who sees in Peter the father he never was, the humanity Underwood cannot ever succumb to, for it might make him weak.  Although, Peter does make Francis weak, in that Underwood feels sorry for Peter Russo, and that seems to scare Francis Underwood if not justify his actions.

image

The original Netflix series by David Fincher is leagues ahead of the last venture. The writing is first class and the characters have depth that makes people care and want to watch it. Since it’s on Netflix, one could watch all 13 episodes in a marathon. “House of Cards” is riveting & Kevin Spacey is brilliant in his portrayal of the dark side of humanity. “I can’t live moment to moment like you Adam”, states Claire Underwood to her on again off gain flame: “I chose the man that I can love for more than a week!”

The show is one that provides defining moments for Netflix.  Catch this show if you can, you won’ t be disappointed by this intelligently written drama.

My Recent Broadway Picnic

021320139049

Last Wednesday I got a chance to catch “Picnic”, based on the 1955 Columbia Pictures classic, now on Broadway through February 24, 2013, at the American Airlines Theatre. I enjoyed the play. It is well written and performed. Two hours went quickly with shirtless Sebastian Stan from Captain America who plays Hal Carter, the player who tries to get his life back on track, but falls in love and in so doing alters the course of his life and that of Madge Owens (played by Maggie Grace).  Madge has lead somewhat of a sheltered life in this small town, and her mom expects her to wed the wealthy Alan Seymour. The ending might be predictable, and we are left wondering if it is true,  what Flo Owens (played by Mar Winnigham), Madge’s mom, states that “Love isn’t enough to keep most people happy”.

021320139050

Indeed, at having fallen in love with Hal, Madge asks her mom, “What are you supposed to do with the love you feel?”  This is in response to her mom’s request that she forget Hal and stick with the wealthy Al Seymour, who Madge has been seeing for a while, seemingly with no commitment or consummation of the relationship, as has occurred so quickly with the drifter Hal.  “Where is it you can take it?”, Madge asks.  Her mom responds that she never found out.

021320139051

There is one set, the back porch and yard, where all of the action takes place, in this well scripted play.  It was a pleasure to see a seasoned pro like Ellen Burstyn on stage.  The cast works well together and the comedic moments (Elizabeth Marvel is hilarious as, Rosemary Sydney, the spinster school teacher) are funny.  It is a refreshing respite from the musicals and flashy productions.  Catch it before it ends its limited run on February 24, 2013.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 7.5, because it is well acted and entertaining,  if somewhat predictable.  There is so much lesser fare on Broadway these days, where some shows seem to open and close overnight.  Don’t miss this one!

Upgrading Your BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha A or B to the Real Thing (BB10 OS 10.0.10.261)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEV ALPHA

1. Download the OS from the above link. Because of the way mega.co.nz is set up, you’ll probably need Google Chrome to do that.

2. Unzip it.

3. Turn off  and connect your Dev Alpha to your PC.  Let the BB drivers load, if the Blackberry Link or Desktop software launches “X” out of it!  Turn the Dev Alpha off again.

4. Run the .exe. “X” out of the Desk Top Software if it tries to launch; when you enter the device password you will see the green LED indicating all is good to go.

5. Let it install ( you will see a not too sexy status of the % installed) and go through the setup on the device when it turns on again, after the green LED is gone at 100%, you can unplug the USB and go through te screen prompts, after the device boots (circle around Blackberry logo is full..)

NOTE! If you are presented with an OS update during setup on the Dev Alpha Device , Skip it, by swiping left!

Too Much Technology….Always “On”….Does it Desensitize Us From Real Communication?

As I sit here in front of my TV watching “House of Cards”, the new original series on Netflix (read my separate review of the series later…), I hit the pause button, what with the realization that I have not posted a new blog in several days.  My BlackBerry Playbook at my side, I decided that there was no excuse not to finally try using the app for my blog site on the device to get this out.

How many times have we seen people walking or at a restaurant communicating, phones in hands, with their facebook friends or sending out that tweet, sharing with their extended digital circle of friends, that dinner moment? All the while face to face communication with the people they are with seems stifled or labored. How socially “connected” are we really with that moment? Are our extended tweets and wall posts diluting our abilities to communicate face to face, are we losing skills and brain neuro-connections that will impact the evolution of humankind where our on line lives for some of us become more real than our on ground lives? Are new generations less likely to be able to work with people face to face?

I, like many, value the ability to type out a blog in bed on my tablet (or phone), but no doubt this accessibility to reach out wherever and whenever, has a new evolving code of etiquette, a new evolving “socialization” that will change, is changing, how we interact, react and adapt to our social conditions, depending on how “wired” we really are.

Maybe it is a good idea to take the time to disconnect today to share some special Valentine’s day love,  face to face, with those who matter most to us!

BlackBerry Z10 Phones Go to Market Today in Canada and Soon in China

Ahead of the store placement of BlackBerry Z10 product, Bell is the first mobile company to put out its Z10 ad.  It is also a 30 second spot like yesterday’s Super Bowl ad.  Kind of cute–check it out:

“Bell says orders for the Z10 have topped any previous BlackBerry model, while one Carphone Warehouse Group Plc (CPW) outlet in the U.K., where the phone has been on sale since Jan. 31, sold out of the model in under half an hour, local staff said.”-source-Bloomberg.

The stock under the new NASDAQ symbol, BBRY,  was up 15% yesterday, closing at $14.982.

The first “Keep Moving”  ad fro BlackBerry also aired today in Canada:

They want you to inspire them, engage with them and impress them with your ideas. Watch the intro film to find out all you need to know.”
