How To Recover 2.2 GB For File Storage on My BlackBerry Dev Alpha A

Recently, I wrote on my plan to log my app usage so that I can delete apps I am not using and save storage space on my BlackBerry Dev Alpha A:

Purge of Plentiful Apps On My OS 10 Device

https://pfcsystems.wordpress.com/2013/05/02/purge-of-plentiful-apps-on-my-os-10-device/

I can report, rather qualitatively, at this time, that I hardly use the browser and really don’t play role play games on my Dev Alpha A, likely for the same reason, I prefer the bigger screen of my PlayBook for those two function or my gaming console with a controller.  An obvious delete thus is N.O.V.A. 3.  Even though I got this game for free, I just cannot justify, based on my usage of the game on this device, having an app or game that takes better than 2GB.  I rather have more memory for my photos and for taking more photos.  As a quick report on my usage, I find that I use the same two or three apps to check on BlackBerry news, but I mainly use the web on my lap top or PlayBook with a Google search for this.  I use two or three weather apps. I still like the android port of Accuweather best as it has a nifty graphical view and reports the humidity.  The native Accuweather (not “weather” so much) app is also used.  I use an android port of Bloomberg a fair bit to check on stocks.  I like the news feature associated with this app. I use Foursquare a fair bit, POYNT for movies, the native social apps: FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I use Whatsapp to keep in touch with friends outside the USA, as very few of them seem to have a BlackBerry, so BBM is not an option, although it is superior to Whatsapp.  I use WordPress a fair bit, Remember, BlackBerry Travel, GasBuddy, BBM and Battery Lover (even if I am annoyed that the latest version does not correctly report the battery temperature!). I use Stuff I need for my grocery shopping. I like the running list, and I can just check or uncheck an item; who doesn’t usually buy the same stuff?  I use the native NY Times app, CBC News, USA Today and the android ports of CNN, Sky and ABC News as well as the native Al Jazeera app.  I use Cooklet, although my own app, PFCSystems, is great for news and recipes too.  I like and use the android port of the Associated Press app.

What apps do you use most? Let us know in the comments below; we want to hear from you!

Purge of Plentiful Apps On My OS 10 Device

IMG_00000020IMG_00000281IMG_00000030

Is it that I am older and not app crazed, that having 21 pages of 16 apps or 336 apps all of a sudden seems crazy!  Frankly, I can name on one or two hands, maximum, the apps I use on a regular basis on my Dev Alpha Device: FourSquare, CB10, numerous Weather Apps (I still like the android Accuweather app best, and will delete the other 4 or five soon!), N4BB, CNBC  (android), CNNMoney  (android), World Stock Market, TV Guide (android), NYCSubway (and every subway/train app I could find for when I am in say London or Washington or Barcelona, next!) , WordPress, Bloomberg (android), Gas Buddy, Poynt (android), Battery Lover, several news apps, and ofcourse the native Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn apps (as well as several android versions of these– that I used in the past and still have in case the native apps disappear,  or it just makes me feel good to have the familiar android versions as “back-up”). I also like Kayak, T-Mobile My Account, but I don’t use these everyday, and I am experimenting with BlackBerry Travel and several airline apps.  I also like my own app, PFCSystems (I am biased!).  You get the idea, more apps than I can list or show screen captures of without boring you.

I have several apps that I have no idea what they do or with so few users that I know on them that I have to question why I have them at all, ooVoo, Whatsapp, Instagram (still can’t login!!), Waze, Pandora, Songza, Vevo, Overdrive media, Gamecontroller (uhm–never used it with my Wii or XBox–what is it for exactly???!!), Joystick, Slacker, etc, that everybody seems to have/want, so I should have them too!  I really would like Ubersocial, but my android port does not really work! Oh yes, and even though I am not big on gaming on a small screen, I have several games including the memory hog, NOVA 3 which I must delete soon, since I feel guilty that near 2GB of disk space is being eaten up by it, and I am running out of space.

So, I am going to start deleting apps soon.  I am going to catalog the top 20, if there are that many that I actually use, over the next two weeks.  Here is the plan.  I am going to add to a “Remember” file the name of every app I use and then add an “x”  next to the name every time I use it during the day.  At the end of the two weeks, I will post an article on how my app usage went.  I encourage you to try the same experiment–maybe for a week and share your top app use with us in the comments below!

Ok, time to watch a Netflix movie on my small device before Netflix loses another 2000 movies! Not, will watch “Fringe” on my big screen streamed off Netflix! Unless ofcourse, it was axed today with the likes of that Canadian staple, “South Park”.  Uhm, Netflix, do you have something against Canadiana, refusing to get on a BlackBerry OS 10 device officially and now dropping South Park?

POYNT Native App for BlackBerry Playbook and Android App for Z10

IMG_00000217 IMG_00000218 IMG_00000221

UPDATE May 1, 2013

I really like this app and it still offers more than most. In mid March, the app was not linking to movie times or offering movie trailers in either its native PlayBook version or the side-loaded android port on my OS 10. They must have ponied up some $$$, as it all works really well now!

Original Article:

I downloaded “POYNT” on my BlackBery PlayBook.  I wanted it on my OS 10 device, so I side-loaded the android version onto it which I got from the Goodreader site.   I like being able to search for cheap gas and coupon offers in my location. All worked fine on the PlayBook.  When playing with the android app on the OS 10 device, I could not get movie schedule/time information always getting an error of the form:

“Movie Data is available from Thu Feb 28, 2013 – Mar 7, 2013. Please, set your search date to a date that is in range and try again.”

When I set today or a future date, I still get the same error.  I checked the app on my PlayBook, and I see the same response.  I know Poynt filed for bankruptcy, is this the reason why all of a sudden I cannot get the local movie times on either the native or android app? Is anyone else seeing this error?  Please, tell us about your experience with Poynt.

IMG_00000214 IMG_00000222

The details on side-loading the app can be found on a prior post:

Side Loading Android Apps onto Your Playbook or BlackBerry 10 Device

Side Loading Android Apps onto Your Playbook or BlackBerry 10 Device

Here is the developer’s description of Poynt for the BlackBerry PlayBook:

Poynt is an award-winning local search app that lets you find and connect with businesses, movies, restaurants, people, offers and events near you whenever and wherever you need them. Older Android Version of Netflix Available For BlackBerry Z10

IMG_00000242IMG_00000241

I recently downloaded an older Android version of a Netflix app, having been pointed to this site by crackBerry.com:

http://www.filedropper.com/comnetflixmediaclient-18b561-droid

Info on side-loading the app:

https://pfcsystems.wordpress.com/2013/02/16/side-loading-android-apps-onto-your-playbook-or-blackberry-10-device/

Ok—it actually works well on my Dev Alpha, but it won’t even launch on my original build Playbook (wifi version).  I really wanted to be able to watch Netflix on the big screen real estate of the BlackBerry tablet, but not yet!  Are you listening Netflix?!  Let us know if you proceed, at your own risk, to download the app what you find.

BlackBerry 10 Instagram App from a “G” site

Z10 Instagram app!  Ok, so,  since this “Instagram” is so crazy with followers–here’s an unofficial release from a “G” rated site!  Is that “G” for “G”oodReader?  You’ll need to have an account created already from an i-phone or android phone. Then, you can just login; trying to register with this side-loaded app does not work!  Click the active link below:
